I'll say it: Brown should have left the original trilogy as is. *But* I have no problem with Iron Gold starting a new series; that would have been the correct way to go about this instead of "continuing" the same series after a 10 year time gap in the story. I want to make this distinction because I don't think Iron Gold is terrible as the first book of a series that sets up more books. Granted, you obviously need the background of the original trilogy to read Iron Gold but I think it would have been better with more distinct separation. I will be continuing the series which I know plenty of people have given up on it.

I think that having the four different POVs and bouncing between them was far too much. I don't mind bouncing POVs when done well but these were spread so far apart in location as well as part of the story that at times it became confusing, especially on audio. Speaking of the audio, I absolutely *hated* the narrator for Lysander. And speaking of hating people, Lyria is not particularly likable, I'm hoping her story gets better in Dark Age because her chapters are just depressing and boring (until later on when they merge with Ephraim's).

Darrow's storyline definitely redeems the book, though it is just a continuous more of the same even though it's been ten years which seem's a bit unrealistic to some extent. There doesn't seem to have been much character development in the gap between Morning Star and Iron Gold.

I won't say this book is worth it until I get through Dark Age, if Dark Age is better then it will be worth reading Iron Gold to get there.

Multiple POVs took some time getting used to, but I actually hope the series stays this way while it can.

Would’ve been great if
Lysander
wasn’t in it and if
Darrow
would just have an ounce of empathy. Otherwise I loved the new characters and am curious to see how they evolve.

hard to get through in multiple ways.

The first 200 pages is super slow. The multiple POV changes were getting boring to me. After about the 200 page mark, it does pick up. I highly recommend pushing through. It gets much better.

This book was really good, but it was difficult to see some of the characters I love not getting the happy lives I think they deserve. However, that makes it all the more realistic. Most fantasies end with the downfall of an evil regime, but don’t show the aftermath. I like how this shows the difficulties and turmoil of completely changing a society.

Also I just want to say that I hate Lysander. Cassius did so much for him and he’s just a little POS that couldn’t even give Cassius an honorable death. Then backs slavers. He obviously didn’t listen to anything Cassius had to teach him. He’s going against the morality of all these people he supposedly looked up to.

There are no winners in war. Beautifully told through layered characters. No matter which side of the war you agree with, you sympathize with each of the characters and feel their pain.

Great book! The first trilogy is better imo, but this was still great! I loved the dynamic between Darrow and Pax. It seemed realistic, given what they've been through. I also loved Lyria's character. As a teenage girl, I think Brown did a great job writing her. I didn't like Ephraim much, but all the other characters I absolutely LOVED. I also cried when
Cassius died :(
