Reading a romance with a fairy rat-man was not on my bingo card for 2024 but here we are 🤷‍♀️

Honestly, I think this book has a lot of wasted potential. The pacing at the first half of the book was great, then everything kind of spiraled and started going at super speed. I feel like the book should have been much longer, which is something I rarely ever say. It just didn’t have enough time to develop the plot or the relationships between the characters, and in the end both felt lacking.

The romance between Winnie and Quincy was so disappointing because I think it actually could’ve been super cute if it had actually been given the time to develop? Like, their whole relationship started developing super quickly, very suddenly about halfway through the story and it felt extremely rushed at the end. I liked both of the characters, but their relationship would’ve felt a lot more earned if it had been given time; ideally if they waited until a possible second book to get together. Honestly, Winnie’s relationships with Robert was rushed too, so when he gets abducted I didn’t care all that much.

Idk, nothing really worked for me but for some reason I also still kind of enjoyed it. I think it’s definitely the weakest of Atwater’s books that I’ve read, but despite that I enjoyed it more than Longshadow. I’ll probably only continue though because it’s more closely linked to the regency fairy tales trilogy than I thought, and I’m curious how it’s going to go. But I still think it could’ve been a lot better 😕

The Witchwood Knot
by Olivia Atwater

THOUGHTS:

I want to thank NetGalley, the publisher and the author for giving me the opportunity to read an e-arc in exchange for my honest review.

Do you like:

*Gothic Fantasies
*Magic
*Victorian Era
*Fae/Creatures
*Haunted Houses

Then this book IS FOR YOU!

Ate it up! I ate this entire book up. IN ONE SITTING. I was living for this entire adventure. I am a sucker for all things gothic placed into a book and when you sprinkle that adventure with fantasy, a smidge of romance and some horror you have me on my knees. This book was beautiful, mysterious and dark. The world building was fabulous, the characters and their dialogue were perfection, this plot had it all from start to finish.

This book has you guessing everything until the very end. There are twists and turns throughout and I loved the mystery of thinking I know what is going to happen in the book and being wrong. LOVED IT. I loved following the relationships and the dynamics between characters. Oliver and Winnie were perfection!

This book needs to be read by everybody who loves all things dark and spooky and gothic. It comes at a perfect time and I am so glad that I got to sink my teeth into this book. I am absolutely going to be sharing this and recommending this book to ALL PEOPLE. A MUST HAVE on the TBR.

What can I say? At this point I’m afraid it’s me and not the book 🤣 So take my opinion during this ongoing reading slump for a grain of salt.

This book gave me Mexican Gothic x Rebecca vibes. It relied heavily on atmosphere and mood, and the worldbuilding and pace were far too slow and ultimately underdeveloped for my taste. I loved the romance, but by the time we got to it I wasn’t invested anymore. On a positive note, the writing and language was immaculate. I am not giving up on this author yet!
