when i was younger, my mom said that it was “important” for me to read certain books once i was older. beloved was definitely one (i think the colour purple was another). she said it “destroyed” her but it’s a beautiful book. what a great description!

toni morrison…you are an absolute BLESSING to the literary world. her prose is so vivid, poetic which makes the book so much more haunting. one of the hardest things about reading this book is that if you don’t take a break, it WILL consume you. i read over half of it in a couple weeks but had to stop. so glad i picked it up.

american slavery is a REAL thing that happened. it’s so easy to push it to “hundreds of years ago” and ignore the lasting implications, but SOCIETY WAS BUILT UPON SLAVERY! and morrison’s extensive research about enslavement is very clear in the book.

this book will make you laugh and cry. your heart will swell with joy and break a hundred times. and it’s amazing!

This novel was one of the first books I ever truly fell in love with. I hate rereading books but I am always fighting off the urge to reread this book. It is just a masterpiece of a novel and every time you read it, you learn something new about the story or characters.

I also love how Morison combined a supernatural element with this old timey story. It was so well written I also didn’t even notice it the first time I read it.

I picked up this title because it was on America's 100 greatest reads. The narrative is nonlinear and at first I was incredibly frustrated because I couldn't understand what I was reading. Eventually, I allowed the poetic cadence to take over. Some consider this a masterpiece. It's a very difficult read, both in comprehension and subject matter, and I think that was the author's point. The reader struggles with the protagonist. It's hard to say that I liked this book, because it was not enjoyable (and not meant to be), yet I'm satisfied to have read it. Sometimes, you have to get out of your comfort zone.

One of those books that (rightfully) makes you ashamed to be white. Incredibly heartbreaking story that made me want to scream and cry at the same time. Beautifully told, i don't think i'll ever forget this book.
