I picked up this title because it was on America's 100 greatest reads. The narrative is nonlinear and at first I was incredibly frustrated because I couldn't understand what I was reading. Eventually, I allowed the poetic cadence to take over. Some consider this a masterpiece. It's a very difficult read, both in comprehension and subject matter, and I think that was the author's point. The reader struggles with the protagonist. It's hard to say that I liked this book, because it was not enjoyable (and not meant to be), yet I'm satisfied to have read it. Sometimes, you have to get out of your comfort zone.

One of those books that (rightfully) makes you ashamed to be white. Incredibly heartbreaking story that made me want to scream and cry at the same time. Beautifully told, i don't think i'll ever forget this book.

I think if I had read this not for school I would've loved it, which is why I'm not going to rate it. As it is, it's still my favourite book I've read for school so far, but it was a bit mid for me overall. I really liked following Denver's story. The timeline was confusing for me, but I understand why it was done. The story was heartbreaking and there were aspects that I really loved.
