2023:I realized when I picked up a rereleased version of this book and reread this in 2023, that part of what makes this book so unique is it’s Ann Cleeves’ only story told in the first person. Once I read that in the new author’s note, it made so much sense! This feels a lot more like a thriller than a police procedural and now I know why! I’ve read this book twice now and always get pulled in by it; I love the sense of place in this book but there are an awful lot of characters and I felt the murderer reveal was a bit underwhelming.
2019: This was surprising! The blurb on the back of the book was vague but I am confident enough in Ann Cleeves to give it a go with very little information and I'm so glad I did. This isn't the type of story I was expecting and found it very entertaining! I think I read it in less than 24 hours, I was so gripped!
