If I'm being completely honest, I'm actually kind of devastated that this series is over. The Nightmares! Trilogy is an unexpected, but completely worthy, favorite of mine. I was initially intrigued by the premise of the first book, and off-offhandedly picked it up as something I could maybe read and share with my younger brother. I had anticipated an adequate time, but I couldn't have imagined how much I would actually come to love this story and its characters. They took me on a wild ride from start to finish, full of beautiful imagination and wonderful mystery that ultimately captivated me and even infiltrated the way I now think about my own dreams/fears. This final installment wraps the series up nicely, tying all loose ends together and finishing the story with the bravado it deserves. I really can't even form words to articulate how much I loved it and the entire series as a whole. All in all, this series is definitely a favorite of mine and definitely a top recommendation for anyone looking to read middle-grade fiction.

3.5 stars

The conclusion (?!) of the Nightmares! series is the best of the bunch. Charlie Laird’s growing up, something I always find a positive in middle grades, since to keep a series going, young characters sometimes stagnate. One of my favorite fictional things is when the lines between good and evil blur, which has been an underlying tenet to this series in some sense, but really is actually happening here with ICK and INK.

The plot’s got a lot more shades of gray than ever before, and it feels like a good place to end things. I really love the way that Charlie learns about himself and the way that everything resolves. The prophecy element’s pretty stupid, but otherwise this book is really solid.

As per usual, Segel’s narration makes the whole thing a delight. This series is definitely worth listening to.

There's just a special place in my heart for this series, and I think the authors just get better at handling characters as it goes on. Always an enjoyable listen that keeps me engaged.

What a fun conclusion to this series!
