Probably one of the best lectures I had to read.
It not only tells the story of kids growing up with all their questions concerning sexuality or their immense pressure about school, but it created a breakdown of those taboos no author faced until then. It really marks the end of realism and the beginning of the modern period and especially naturalism as era. It‘s really natural and unfiltered, and I appreciate that, because imo, it was only necessary to break with the stereotypical Romanticism/Realism stuff. So if I could, I would thank Wedekind for this work, even if I didn‘t (obviously) lived in the 19th century.
I would love to talk with my future students about this because it still represents issues in our society today. A timless, well-thought literature.

Spring Awakening is a short play that highlights the need of letting children evolve and grow into their own person. It also includes the topic of rape and teenage pregnancy, that is still, strangely, to this day so controversial. It can be upsetting for some to read, but I believe it is worth a read. If it was possible, I would rate this drama as a 3.5 stars.

After recently seeing a regional production of [a:Steven Sater|494146|Steven Sater|http://www.goodreads.com/assets/nophoto/nophoto-U-50x66.jpg] & [a:Duncan Sheik|494145|Duncan Sheik|http://www.goodreads.com/assets/nophoto/nophoto-U-50x66.jpg]'s musical [b:Spring Awakening|980045|Spring Awakening|Steven Sater|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1179965575s/980045.jpg|964934], I felt I should go back and read the banned text it was based on.

Very interesting to see the musical I've seen twice (and listened to dozens, if not hundreds of times) in a simple play format. Most of the beats and set pieces are there with a few extra characters or scenes that had to be cut. The play is very episodic and I have a hard time imagining it without the music. Half the taboo scenes are very understated (the footnotes often explain why the scene is considered so naughty) but I can understand why a tragi-comedy about teenagers having sex, committing suicide, having abortions, etc. might ruffle a few feathers.

This edition is nice because it comes with about 40 pages of notes on the script (whether the translation, the subtext or even a Moritat summing up the story in song), however I found it better to read these after the text of the play rather than before as it's published.
