TW for discussions of sexual harassment and assault, religious trauma, and purity culture

I grew up in this subculture, was raised to believe that Christian men were tough and patriotic, and that my role as a woman was to be submissive and obedient. I always chafed against this structure, and as an adult I’ve moved away from evangelicalism entirely, instead embracing a more progressive Christianity.

This book is so, so important to understand how and why the last few years have not been a fluke but are in fact a fulfillment of evangelical values when it comes to patriarchy, power, and patriotism. As someone who grew up indoctrinated into this mentality, I believe we as a faith and a nation have a lot of deconstructing and reckoning to deal with.

I highly recommend this book to anyone, but especially to my fellow exvangelicals who are deconstructing their faiths. It’s hard and painful work, but it must be done.

Bullet Review:

+ The contents of this are terrifying.

+ It's absolutely mind-blowing to think how the world has evolved to where we are today.

+ After reading this, it 100% makes sense how we are where we are today.

+ It's hilarious that some of the most morally corrupt people with multiple affairs, divorces, sexual harrassment accusations are the heads of these movements (John Wayne, Ronald Reagan, etc.).

+ Pat Robertson, Tim & Bev LaHaye, the DeVos family, Jerry Fallwell, James Dobson, Bill Gothard, Jim Bakker, and Phyllis Schlafly are awful, hateful hypocritical human beings, and I will not be convinced otherwise.

+ Although I lived in the evangelical movement as a child, and although I've followed bits and pieces as an adult, there is so much I didn't know.

+ If this doesn't convince one to burn it all down, I don't know what will.
