  • Excellently creepy, especially in the first third. Thought the
    tower
    idea was cool
  • Area X was immersive, and I found the characters interesting, especially the psychologist
  • A page turner, was the most excited to read I have been in a long time, extra .25 for that
  • Found the second half a little disappointing, but mostly because I enjoyed the first so much
  • No answers are given really

I have yet to finish this book but I'm so thoroughly enjoying it and emersed in it so far I must write a review for now. I will updated when completed.

*This review is 2 and a half chapters in*

The reason I'm reading this book as the film is out now on Netflix and I really wanted to read the book first specially as the covers are so aesthetically pleasing I can't get enough. I am a huge science fiction fanatic you could hand me anything to do with discovering new world and I would devour it and lick it off my plate and probably ask for seconds.

Firstly this book is written in the first person of the main protagonist of the biologist who we aren't suppose to love or hate just understand. The way Jeff Vandermeer has written this is delightfully intelligent making the reader personify the same personality as the biologist. It's written in a way of intrigue and anticipation with also a hint of anxiety of the unknown and the excitement of the adventure and the events to unravel, it's written in a way to make you feel like the character in the story to relate to her emotions and it's creepy how well Vandermeer writes this. It's almost as if I'm exploring Area X myself and unravelling the stories and the scenes as they unfold and itching for more and eagerly waiting for the character to reveal what she sees.

The tension build up and the atmosphere of this book is intense and I actually jumped a bit when they were at the bottom of the 'Tower'...no tunnel...wait no Tower😂 only because the house phone ran and I almost shit a brick. That is when you know you are reading a good book when you feel the intensity the characters do.

I know a lot of people won't like this because it's mainly about the plot development and the character development and finding out exactly what Area X is and people want to be emotionally attached to the characters but that isn't what you are going to find this book. Be ready for a thrilling adventure and discovery of what I think is a new dimension. This book is incredible and it's paced so perfectly that I'm trying to not devour it in one sitting.

*end of first review*

I caved before finishing this book and watched the film on Netflix so this review is going to be quite hard not to be biased

I found getting close to the end I was a little frustrated at the fact no questions were being answered and that the interesting events that happened weren't written in the book and I think I would of liked stories about each character and what happened to them. However although that would of made the book more exciting I honestly love the fact the book ended with still so many unanswered questions and still having absolutely no clue what is going on. It made the story more interesting and I really liked ending not knowing at all about Area X or Southern reach or anything about the other exhibitions. It was sweet how in the end she carried on her husband's story herself and that although she assumed it was a loveless and pointless relationship she came to realise how perfect it was. It gave more depth and emotion to the character and I really enjoyed the development.

I probably won't end up reading the other two books because I like the idea of not knowing and I don't want to know what happened to the biologist even if they don't find her. I like the idea of the unknown and I want to keep the story like that.

After watching the film on Netflix I feel as if the film was a completely different and more fucked up story and I personally prefer the book format. Anyway the book was great and I thoroughly enjoyed the journey.

BANGER!!!! read this in basically one sitting and ate up every single sentence. i think my face was constantly stuck in a kind of “what the fuck” expression. you get just enough answers at every turn to keep you interested, but never the full solution. the biologist is one of my favorite characters ever. so detached in a way that made her the perfect person to tell this story, but attached enough to keep her grounded and sympathetic. she just has an innate need to know what’s happening around her. it was perfect and i will be devouring the next one immediately.
