Very descriptive. Very immersive. But, I’m not compelled enough to read the rest of the series.

This book is a unique genre of environmental eldritch horror. The narrator was unreliable in a way that had you questioning what was real even when they felt most certain and created an uneasy atmosphere. Some of the biggest point of horror or revelation did fall flat for me as I think that sometimes the author obfuscates too much. Sometimes the horror was too unknown in a way that made me feel confused and frustrated rather than  unsettled.

I enjoyed this book. I like the world that was built. It was a bit short for everything it tried to encompass, leaving a lot told and less shown. It also left a lot of unanswered questions, which I actually appreciated about it—it felt very Lovecraftian. I kept thinking this book would be better as a video game, honestly. The main character was very cold and seemed to embrace that, and while I could appreciate her uniqueness, she also felt inhuman in her lack of desire for connection. Which, I guess could make sense, but it made it harder to connect with her. Will absolutely be reading the rest of these books, despite this one's shortcomings.

Annihilation was INCREDIBLE. It reminded me of a terrifying Doctor Who episode, one where you watch a little too young and it seems to stick with you.

This book was utterly confusing, but it told exactly the story it needed to. It was confusing on purpose, in a way that no- we don't know what's really going on or why- but its still happening anyway, and we can feel that there is a reason for it happening.

The description was intese and incredible, the pacing perfect, the story feeling complete yet leaves you wanting more. Five stars!!!!

My brain is mush.
