Not even close to as good as the trilogy. Probably should not have been written.

I probably should've read the Area X novels again before attempting this prequel. It mostly confused and sometimes annoyed me -- the latter is not the author's fault though: I am in pain (lumbago, yay) and weird fiction just wasn't the right choice for me. Sorry!

I love that we got another book from the series, somehow Vandermeer manages to expand on the story without it feeling derivative or excessive. I think this is better suited to those familiar with his body of work, not for the casual fans of the series.

For some reason I found this more challenging to continue than the original trilogy. I cant put my finger on what was different for me. The prose was beautiful. Everything an eire, creepy, bizarre fever dream (in a good way usually?). It I just found myself really engaged at some points and at others I had trouble staying tuned. I liked the background it gave to the originals set but there were times I felt lost. I listened to all of them on audiobook and the narrator does a great job. All the fucks at the start of part 3 were… a lot. But while I found it a bit tiring he did a good job with it and it really conveyed the state of mind of that part. I dunno. I’m having trouble figuring out how many stars to give but it’s def lower than the originals for me.

lowry was an interesting section, but I loved old Jim and Cass, and the whole doppleganger thing that Vandermeer does so well
I havent read Authority or Acceptance yet but this one was a banger like Annihilation
