DID NOT FINISH

This is like reading a hallucination with indiscernible symbolism.

My favorite of the series. I laughed quite a bit, despite all the body horror at certain points.

I really loved this book. I admittedly hadn’t read Area X in a long time so I forgot some things until I looked them up towards the end.

The book is split into three parts at three different times before Annihilation begins that build on the world in ways that made my head spin in a delightful way. The first two sections were a breeze - the first a little slower document review, the second starting to really drive an intriguing plot and experience entering Area X in a whole new way. When the third section began, I was admittedly thinking “do I really NEED to finish this book? The way this character is written is so grating - although, it is admittedly interesting to see what would happen if someone on meth entered Area X.” So I persevered during a boring work day, and eventually it clicked for me - Wait, the character whose infuriating perspective I’m reading is actually a really important character in the other books. OHHHHH.

Once I grasped that, the ending was smooth sailing and I thought it was SO COOL. It gives so much more perspective on just how insane the world had become even before The Biologist returned. Just when you think JV cant make the world any weirder, you realize you had a shroud pulled over your head to begin with!

I am not good enough at words to review this book in any way that accurately captures the way it made me feel or even does it justice.

4 stars for the first two parts. The dread I felt as I progressed through the first two sections shows the weight of the author’s writing. I also grew to love Old Jim and Cass in a way I did not expect as they built trust and worked to determine the identity of the rogue.

2.5 stars for the last section. I can see what the author was doing with Lowry, and you definitely can’t say that he uses the same voice for each character, but man the beginning of that section was a slog. The section also raised way more questions than answers and overall I’m not sure it was worth including.

To fans of the original trilogy, I would only recommend if you like the vibes of the more twisted parts of Area X, don’t expect to find any answers.
