I love Vandemeer's work and have read almost everything he's written. I like the way he uses stream of consciousness to create complex characters that we often hate but understand. His world building is haunting and inescapable - it has forever changed how i see the world.

All that said- the second part of this book was whack omg.

This is the literary equivalent of bushwacking through a haunted jungle while tripping on mushrooms. It was interesting, but challenging and purposefully confusing. It didn't really answer my questions about the Southern Reach trilogy, but raised even more. I'd like to reread the trilogy and give this another try.

I don't normally like dense prose so I was stretching myself reading so much VanderMeer in a row. I'm only 24 pages in but I am bored with these biologists! I scanned ahead and finally just read the synopsis of the book. I'll be counting on a friend to tell me any juicy bits she liked because I'm moving on.

Like some large-scale jelly and jam preserves operation had gone all cannibal cult.

There's so much I love about this book. But literally what the fuck was going on.

wow

I wish I could give this book 6 stars! So great! now I want to read all the Southern Reach books over again!
