I didn't grow up with Maitland Ward.

Yes, I am of the age that Boy Meets World was airing, but I grew up in Australia and didn't have Foxtel. Boy Meets World didn't flitter across my radar until I was in my early 20s and it certainly didn't mean anything to me until the show hit a revival of sorts a good decade or so later. I enjoyed White Chicks, but my interest was more on Terry Crews and the Wayan Brothers than anyone else.

But then I saw the furore this book stirred up last year and it immediately landed on my 'to-read' and 'to-buy' list. I like biographies and memoirs that have a reason to stand out from the norm, and something about 'wannabes and failed-to-bes' are a favourite. Would-be ballerinas, should-have-been musicians, could-have-been actors.

Besides, I'm sex worker-positive and the general belief I've held (and has been iterated to those who have worked in the industry) is that if you enter it because you genuinely want to, then you'll have a good experience. Those forced into it are destined to hate it.

It's not immediately clear if Ward had a ghostwriter or a lot of assistance writing this; she mentions taking a lot of creative writing classes and has reportedly written a number of erotic stories. Whether she did or didn't, it doesn't matter; this is very easy to read and a lot better than some other memoirs I've read. She's frank and funny and openly aware of the privilege she has, entering porn after mainstream work. That alone is going to give her a massive hand up than those starting on the rougher track.

I want to know all those she mentioned by name in the book (Dylan Shaw and Robin Lippin to name a few) thought of this book. I'd also love to know who Kat truly is. Kat Graham? I also liked seeing how those work-hungry and fame-desperate celebrities treat red carpets and various events... Ward included.

If you're not a fan of porn or sex work, give it a pass. But it's certainly a look into the more down-and-out side of Hollywood and a look into the unemployed side of it that the majority would be experiencing.

Interesting read touched mostly on porn career. So if you’re looking for a memoir of her life this isn’t for you.

A really interesting book. A unique perspective and some very frank talk about things. Fun and articulate as well. Made me want to know more about her and about what she's done.

This was a hard..err difficult audiobook to get through. I kept stopping to look up people she was name dropping. And I also had to look up her err current work. You know, for science.

Nice book. Share it with someone you love or lust over.

This was a funny, entertaining memoir that gave insights into an industry I knew little about. I wasn’t that familiar with her previously but I heard her on a podcast and got interested in her story from there. I enjoyed this one!

Thank you Atria Books for my gifted copy of this book!

Maitland Ward began acting as a teen on The Bold and the Beautiful, and chasing acting roles found her on sets like Boy Meets World and White Chicks. But after years of pursing traditional Hollywood acting jobs, Maitland made the conscious decision to pursue screen time in a more risqué setting. First through sexy cosplay, then on her wildly successful Patreon account, and finally by making her entrance in the porn industry, where she is now considered one of the most respected actresses in the industry.

This is not your average memoir! I knew of Maitland because of her role in Boy Meets World, but I had no idea what an incredible career she has made since the early 2000s. She was determined to pave her own way, forgoing the idealistic persona she knew Disney would appreciate in order to find fulfillment in her work and personal life. While some might assume those in the porn industry settled for the only screen time they could find, Maitland’s sex-positive book highlights how talented and purposeful individuals have crafted films with strong acting and top tier intimacy.

It's funny and honest. It's also sad and eye-opening. But more than that it's hopeful and inspiring.
