this writing style had me moaning the entire way through and the end i was writhing around like some kind of giant land worm this is insanely impressive and expressive she owes her readers nothing and yet i gained everything literal masterpiece lord’s work i want everyone to read this and to gatekeep this from everyone at the same time.

By no means an easy read, but compelling nevertheless.

NOT recommended for anyone who has lost a loved one to brain cancer.

This made it onto my reading list years ago, from a review somewhere. It is powerful but dark, and makes me want to scrub myself clean after spending this long with the main character.

An at times challenging stream of consciousness narration, of a pretty bleak life. Technically well done, very powerful, but not something I could ever bring myself to read again.

Deeply devastating and very beautiful

beautiful, but almost too sad to be worth it

Traumatised

This is not a light read but definitely a worthwhile one. McBride writes in a style that is at first jarring and difficult to read. However, once you get used to it, her writing becomes immensely compelling and the rhythm of it makes it feel like a raw reality. A reality that doesn’t restrict itself to the rules of sentence structure or logic - a reality more like our own than a work of fiction. A Girl is a Half-formed Thing is a troubling coming of age story; a story of abuse and misplaced guilt, of suffering and of family. It is masterfully constructed and poignant.
