I'm really not sure what to say about this book. Firstly, I suppose, the style of writing (a modification on steam of consciousness) is initially jarring and takes a while to get used to. There are some undeniably beautiful sections, which are both poetic description and recounting action. I definitely think that the plot itself possesses emotional force, but I have to admit that I found the prolific use of sex as a means of combating her darker feelings. Whilst the text works as a story of sexual awakening and female sexual empowerment (the protagonist controls her own sexual destiny throughout most of the text), I found that sex was used so often that it began to detract from other areas of the text and, for me it was not explored as fully as it could be.

I read to page 6 of this book and just couldn't do it any longer. The writing style is horrible and I could not bear reading 227 pages of it. I normally keep reading, even if there's a slow start and it hasn't engaged me but after a quick skim, I saw the entire book was read this. why!?!

Todas mis enhorabuenas a la autora, les editores y traductore pq wow WOW

3,5 stars - the story was great, but half the time, the style distracted from the story, being pointlessly confusing and too immature (as if she never grew any older than 12 or 13).

it took me two days to gather my thoughts on this book. I really loved it and I was so touched by it.

it’s unlike anything I’ve read. the form and writing style chosen by the author work so well. it was truly an experience of being in someone’s head, not only reading about things in a page. it also brings much more emphasis to this kind of plot.

it was beautiful and tragic and poetic and it made me feel something
challenging dark emotional tense

The writing style was very interesting, unlike anything I have read before, but so clever. So raw and real, gut-wrenching, disgusting, cold, terrible - I loved it.

Well, that was a rough one.

This book does not hold your hand. You will turn each page hoping to breathe until you reach the back cover. It will rake through you. Dazzling, repulsive, unforgettable.

This book. This bloody book.

I heard amazing things about it on booktube years ago and picked it up in a charity shop. I started reading it in 2019 and immediately hated it. I gave up about 20 pages in and picked it up many times over the next few years with the intention of restarting it and trying again. Finally restarted and read the entire thing in Feb 2023, 4 years after I first opened it. It’s only 203 pages long but every single one felt like a real slog.

The basic premise is that this is a vague stream of consciousness type narrative from an unnamed and unreliable female narrator. Her brother has a brain tumour he eventually succumbs to and this book depicts her relationship with him, her mother and other family members. She is also sexually abused, raped, has a very unhealthy relationship with men and eventually commits suicide. It is GRIM.

It’s raw and visceral and reminded me a lot of ‘The Vegetarian’ by Han Kang. I also hated that book.

The writing here was incoherent drivel but I completely understand what the author was trying to do. If her aim was to leave a lasting impression of her novel then she absolutely did that, however I will not be picking up any more of her books.
