The style of storytelling was very refreshing and I enjoyed the characters as everyone seemed to have more thought than just being a stand-in for plot convenience sake. Everything felt realistic in a fantastical way.
Objectively speaking the best book I've ever read. Poetic, funny, captivating, brutal and so beautiful that I ended it with a smile and blinking away tears.

This book was expertly crafted. It is told from a story telling format and structured with brief sentences that break up paragraphs. The method of story telling and structure paired with the uniqueness that is unmatched to any other fantasy story I have ever read makes this novel stand out. Every single detail was relevant to the greater story line and every time I thought to myself this can’t get any stranger it did. The author includes POVs from everything from nature to corpses on the side of the road. This empire is dark and the tone and content of this book portrays that. You will feel ill and yucky but that is the intent of the author. Simply profound.

I really tried, but the authors style, while interesting, kept pushing me out of the story. I ended up reading/skimming the last 50 or so pages just to see how it ended as I liked the story premise and that satisfied me enough to not force myself to read the rest of the book and put me in a slump.

The story telling felt immersive as if you yourself had been written into it. I enjoyed the novel way it was told from three different perspectives. The prose was which I both enjoyed and did not enjoy at the same time.
The narrator really brought the tale to life, without the audiobook I do not think I would have finished it or at least it would’ve taken that much longer to complete. I both liked and disliked the how descriptive the writing is, I felt I could clearly imagine the world/s in my mind, but it was sadly not a page turner for me as the writing felt somewhat disjointed and was difficult to read through. Some parts felt difficult to get through even though I absolutely adored the story it weaved. The cast of characters were fascinating and the tale engrossing. I am sad I could not fully enjoy the style of writing, as unique and novel it may be.
I thoroughly enjoyed the telling through the audiobook format and recommend those who like the story/concept and were not the biggest fan of the writing style to listen to the audiobook. I feel like it shines when spoken rather than read on a page. I feel like that’s probably the biggest reason for my higher rating, together with the intriguing story and how much I adored the characters, if it was based on reading the book itself I would probably rate a 3/3.25. It seems I’m not a fan of Simon Jimenez writing style though I’ve heard this is more experimental and different compared to his other novel. I may give it a try as I really do like his concepts and imagination.
