"The first British novel that includes unconcealed homosexual love" and pretty brilliant at that <3

Sorry I don't think I can produce any more coherent review than that. I still haven't recovered from emotional turmoil that was the last chapter.

Beautifully written, tender and heartbreaking - and it’s astonishing to think a gay romance as compelling, honest and open as this was published in 1953.

A beautifully written book. While reading, I felt like I had to repeatedly pick up my heart from the floor.

Mary Renault is such a compelling writer. Not many authors can pull off a story based on a metaphor in Plato’s philosophy, but Renault had a complete understanding of what she wanted to communicate with her characters.

Complex, well-written characters, a haunting story, and beautiful prose. Mary Renault deserves much more recognition for her work.
