I really enjoyed this! It had an interesting magic system and world and I liked each of the characters! There were funnies and sad parts and I'm hoping there's going to be a book 2!

This was pretty much a full queer cast which I didn't expect but really appreciated! Also, it was nice to read during Pride Month! The characters sexuality wasn't discussed in the book because it was accepted in their world, which was refreshing.

It gave me Six of Crows and A Darker Shade of Magic vibes - which was super fun. I also didn't realize that this book was being pitched with Six of Crows vibes, so I felt pretty vindicated when I saw that 😂

Some things I didn't like:

🌞It's not that I didn't like the magic system, it's just I wish it was a little more fleshed out. It had the potential to be really good, but it fell flat in most parts.

🌞Gabriel - this guy was kinda an idiot.

🌞The errors. Normally, I can overlook grammatical or language errors, but there were a lot in this book and it sometimes took me out of the story 😅 But, it's indie, so I'm not going to hold it against the author (or my star rating)

Thank you so much to the author for sending me a physical copy for review 💛💛

This is perfect for anyone wanting a quick and easy fantasy read. The magic system I thought was highly intriguing! The action is fast-paced and the world-building I found easy to understand. Characters are likable however I do think they could’ve been fleshed out better. They just came across as very juvenile when most are in the mid to late 20s. This is a “me” thing probably because the writing style in particular isn’t my cup of tea.

Overall, it’s enjoyable for what it is if this particular story is up your alley!

I was really excited for this book, I saw reviews saying its like six of crows meets a darker shade of magic. Which are like two of my favorite series ever, so I figured I'd be love this. Honestly, I was kind of disappointed, the book wasn't necessarily bad, but I just could not care about the characters, which is really how I base the quality on a book like this. They had a bit of backstory, but it felt like they kind of lacked depth. They felt one dimensional to me.

Gabriel was the only one I kind of cared about. The characters and the plot all kind of felt a little derivative of other stories as well. The story was original, no plagiarism here, but it did feel like I was reading something that heavily pulled stuff from better stories.

Also the magic system is confusing and never really explained. I don't have a problem with more open ended magic systems, but this one just felt weird, like we didn't really seem to get any actual parameters or anything. It seems cool and I see potential, but it didn't feel like a fully formed idea.

The plot and climax also kind of left something to be desired at the end.

All in all, this could have been a really excellent book but with the writing it ended up just being okay.

RTC!

I absolutely flew through my copy of An Incarnation of Shadow and Light! I’m not kidding, I read it in one sitting! The world building is rich and the magic is complex, but everything is easily consumed and engaging! The characters are a great mix of lovable and hate-able, which I personally love in a fantasy book! I would totally recommend picking this one up

3.5 ⭐️ Very nice novel, catchy, nice world building, interesting how the magic of works, and incredible relationships.

3⭐️

This book is good in the sense that the plot and world building are easy to understand, so it is not difficult to get into. However, the characters felt a little flat. There was a lot of potential to fully develop complex personalities for each of the four main characters, but it just wasn’t executed properly. The dynamics and relationships between the characters at times felt awkward and abrupt. There is a lot of LGBTQ+ representation in the book, which is nice. The plot seemed a little rushed at certain points, which prohibited me from really making an emotional connection with the story and the characters. Nothing truly excited me or kept me on my toes, but it would still be a great book for those trying to get into fantasy though because of its simplicity.

Special thanks to Hazel Book Tours and the author for giving me an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This looks like everything that I'm looking for in a book, I can't wait to read it!
