I listened to the audiobook version, and Viola is an incredible story teller. Her Grammy for her reading of it was absolutely deserved.

Oof. Viola Davis is one tough lady. This whole book should come with a giant trigger warning.

Soooo glad I listened to the audiobook! Davis's story is heartbreaking and triumphant and difficult to listen to sometimes. The bond she has with her sisters is so lovely. It was so cool to listen to her talk about the beginning of her acting career and how acting made her feel while she was on stage and her struggles as a young, broke artist. Hearing her talk about the lack of deep roles for people of color and how your skin has to be a certain color to get certain roles was truly eye opening. It's just not something I think about that often. Her father was incredibly abusive during her childhood
but I'm so glad he changed and became a better man later on in his life.
I loved Davis talking about dating her husband and how protective he is, it was incredibly sweet. You definitely have to check this one out!

I wanted to love it but I I didn’t.  I really liked her in HTGAWM and was interested in learning more about her life. Sadly, it was poorly written in my opinion and It wasn’t really captivating. It felt very repetitive . I don’t understand why this book as got so many good reviews.

This story is inspiring and heartbreaking and difficult to process.

Memoirs seem to always have a narrative that skips around, but that’s the nature of telling a story about a real life. It still felt a little too disjointed in places.
Also the story about the man who killed the cat in front of them and chased her sister around town felt unbelievable to me

So poetically written. I listened on audiobook and it was beautiful and engaging. What a life Viola lived and what an honor to listen. Another great book that reminds us why we need to buy/listen to women voices and stories.
