Wow, what a powerful read. I really want to give her a hug. Talking about how the teacher stayed after to make sure her sister didn't fall behind almost make me cry. This was such a good reminder to have empathy for others because you never know their circumstance. There were absolutely times that I think she's seeing the world through a very particular lense, but it just brings to the forefront that what you hear as a child sticks with you.

"All I’ve got is me. And that is enough."

Absolutely beautifully written, raw, and so very relatable. There were so many profound moments that she illustratedso beautifully, so much sadness that she overcame. I finished this book in two sittings - One of the best memoirs by far.

Viola Davis’ voice is powerful, and her memoir is one worth broadcasting. This woman is a badass! Bravo - for everything accomplished, from childhood and beyond, without settling or judging, while forgiving and showing compassion. Viola is the heroine I want all my female students to study. I could listen to Finding Myself again, right now. But for tonight, I’m going to watch her on the big screen, with my mouth hanging open in awe.
