I genuinely enjoyed it, though this book had a lot of repetition (day to day life of Theo) and started to slow down in the middle of the book. The death of Theo's mom was Theo's entire personality at first which is a little over the top because she was 6 years old when it happened, so I don't really think she would remember all that much about her life before then. Granted her mother was killed brutally in front of her, but even she recognized, towards the end of the book, that not even she remembered her mother all that well.

Soren was immediately likeable, which I didn't expect. Not sure if that's a good or bad thing.

This is one that I saw at the library and thought, “I like fantasy. Why not?” But now I am so invested in the characters and this plot and I’m going back to the library for the sequel ASAP

This book was amazing. The magic was easy and there wasn't a lot of worldbuilding. Every character ownes my heart (except the kaiser ofc) and the character development was just gorgeous. I really like the writing style and i read this in one sitting. I recomend this book to everyone who loves a fantasy book with politics and a love triangle (there is a prince in the love triangle, do I even need to say more)

1.5 STARS ***

One star because it's the same old YA blueprint that I've read 100 times before. Lots of nothing, a superficial 'i love you after 3 days' romance, & unbearably slow pacing (I had to listen on 2x speed towards the end). However, +0.5 stars because the ending started to get more exciting and interesting. The only issue was the pacing. Had it been quicker and had a bit more action, it would've been better. It just wasn't enough to hook me into reading the next installment. Also there is a messy love triangle which is not my thing. Oh well.

There are plenty of flaws in this book, and while I do tend to be able to talk much more easily about flaws I actually tend to ignore them even more easily unless it's really too much.
I actually think this MC is better than a lot of other YA female protagonists. She ofc is conflicted about killing a friend who has been nothing but kind to her. She knows she needs seduce the prince so that he can be used even as she realises does like him. She had to deal with her mother being killed, being forced to kill her father, and while she lived in luxury she has to deal with ridicule and physical abuse since she was a child. I don't understand the take that because of this she doesn't have much to complain about and could have done something sooner. She's just 16 is she supposed to already lead a revolution much younger?
The book has all the flaws that I expected such a book. Bad writing at certain points. Yes. A love triangle I have no interest in. Yes. Plotholes. I guess. And yes it's also is cliched. And yes the Prince (Prinz) is kind of a fool who too easily goes along with everything but I like that he sides against his father eventually. I have a feeling the MC's friend is going to have a much bigger role later on.
