Torment, Identity, Gothic-Romance
“My life was a snarl, a rat’s nest of dangling threads and loose ends. I couldn’t possibly have a happy ending, but I wanted a neat one.”
Overall: Poses interesting novel-within-a-novel parallel between Joan and other versions of herself, yet suffered from unevenness and rote ended plots.
Pros:
-- Writing about other books
-- nostalgic, witty passages out of genre
Cons:
-- Progression was slow, complicated, and often bloated
-- unneeded flashbacks, repetitive attempts to bridge characterization

The story wasn't going one way, it was going between the child struggling with obesity and a bit cruel mother, the weight- losing teen/young woman, the mistress by accident, the married woman, the cliche writer, the mistress again, the dead woman... you can't know which Joan -or even Joan at all- you're reading about.
Nevertheless, Margaret Atwood is an amazing writer and her style is so charming.

Имаше своите добри моменти, но като цяло се оказа, че не е моята бира. Може и очакванията ми да са били съвсем различни.

I've given up on yet another Atwood. I don't know whether to be annoyed with me or her.

Loved it! First Atwood novel I've been in love with since I first read Cat's Eye and Handmaid's Tale.

Atwood is a master at planting themes and imagery and then skillfully weaving them through this story to full resolution at the end. I was a little puzzled by the layout of the novel but was convinced by Part 4 that it was told in the chronological order that was most appropriate. For all of the comedic drama that was created, I was pleasantly relieved with the narrator’s relatively quiet exit, even if the exposition felt a little rushed.
Overall, line by line, this was one of the most enjoyable books I’ve ever read.
