i’m not sure what i was expecting, but it wasn’t this.

i enjoyed the writing style & this was definitely a page turner. but nothing really happened?? the twist was surprising & well established but i needed more background & details with what happened within the years between 2 summers. the vague story telling didn’t do the plot justice.

the audiobook was also well done. when i can envision an entire setting based on very brief, loosely detailed descriptions, that’s strong writing.

i’d probably watch the show but have no interest in continuing the series.

this book would get a very high 3 stars, but i'm still undecided on a full four...at first i had trouble with cady, b/c i didn't like her as a character. though she did grow on me as it progressed. after finding out that the other 3 liars all died during summer 15, i do feel compelled to go back and re-visit some of the scenes in summer 17 to see how much sense they make. i'm guessing that cady never interacts with them when the other members of her fam are around, and that does make me think the book was well written enough so as not to make that seem suspicious. However, all the build up to finding out the truth, especially when cady would be ballsy enough to ask someone straight-up what happened and they would just tell her honestly they weren’t going to answer her, did get a little old. Though I see now why they would do it. of course I loved that this took place right off martha’s vineyard, not to mention the wonderful job lockhart did of describing all the melodramatic emotion that comes with teenage/first loves. That being said, I did happen to read this book right after a judy blume stint (revisiting summer sisters and in the unlikely event) so while I loved the language/emotional charge of a 17 year old pining for a boy she thinks is just out of reach, I may need to read a book about an adult soon…

this book was HARD to read so i listened to the audiobook and it was much easier and didn’t seem as bland? i don’t know how to explain it but i wouldn’t rr it again. the show outdid the book, for once.

This feels like a YA version of “we have always lived in the castle” for some reason

The first half was very slow but I think the second half made up for it, it was much better
