This is the 12th of my Booker prize 2025 readathon
The novel starts well. I immediately invested in the story where someone has been killed by being battered to death with a large gold bullion bar. There’s a shifting narrator from chapters to chapter which I found somewhat confusing. It takes me a few pages to catch up to whose point of view we are reading about in each new chapter which I found quite unsettling and spoiled the flow of the novel
Of course I did whatever everybody did and googled Cartmal literary festival I was delighted to discover a website for this fictional festival very funny
Ultimately, I got rather lost towards the end of this book. Didn’t really understand what it was setting out to do beyond the straightforward naturalistic story there is clearly another element which totally went over my head
