There are three underground families in Boston: the O'Malleys, the Hallorans, and the Sheridans. There's been an uneasy peace that existed among the three but all it takes is the actions of one family member to create a ripple effect that threatens to drown everyone else. The unraveling may begin with one death and leads to another, but in between, there's an unexpected love that blossoms between Carrigan and James, just like love blossomed for Carrigan's brother, Teague, and Callista Sheridan. But can love last between an O'Malley and a Halloran, considering it was James's father who had a hand in the death of Carrigan's youngest O'Malley sibling, Devlin? Will family ties and loyalty tear them apart or will they stand together?

This sequel had a Romeo and Juliet feel to it, but with an underground family rivalry touch to it, and it stood quite well on its own. Carrigan and James's love story is more complicated than Teague and Callista's before it. Do you choose to be with the man whose family caused your own so much grief or do you take the opportunity for love and freedom and run with it even if it means being shunned by the only people you've cared about? Put in Carrigan's shoes, I would feel absolutely wretched, but the heart wants what it wants and sometimes you need to make a choice for yourself and hope that as time goes by and tempers cool, there'll be more acceptance and understanding. The Wedding Pact gets 4.5 stars out of five. ♥

Cardigan’s story plays out in the aftermath of the death of Devlin & the introduction of The Romanov’s. It is incredibly fast paced but the relationships develop so deeply. This is one of my favorites of this series.

Heated Rivals by Katee Robert is a dark mafia romance novel and the second book in The O'Malleys series. We follow multiple POV characters but have a deeper focus on two: Carrigan and James.

Carrigan O'Malley always knew she would have to marry for politics, not love. Now her father has only given her the month until her next birthday to choose a husband from a list. As a second son, James didn't expect to run the Hallorans. And though there may be peace at present, war is always brewing between the families.

This book was previously published as The Wedding Pact. I've really been liking the designs on the new alternative covers from Forever.

Let me start out by saying that I love Katee's books, I support her on Patreon. So I'm probably a little biased.

But y'all... this was great and I inhaled it within 24 hours. I liked it better than the first book, and I'm so excited to keep reading in this series!

I was already here for Carrigan and James from our interlude with them in the first book in the series, Dark Succession (previously published as The Marriage Contract). As in all of her books, consent is shown really well here, which I always appreciate.

We peek into the lives of a few of the other O'Malley siblings here. Sometimes their chapters dragged a bit for me, but I appreciate the conceit that this story is about a group of siblings and I do like checking in on them and watching their growth.

Tropes in this book include: enemies to lovers, forbidden love

CW: abusive father, sibling death (on page), guns, blood, assault, murder, torture (mentioned), firearms, sexual assault (brief), abduction (mentioned)

I received a copy of this book to review. All opinions contained herein are my own.
