The Shining is one of my best friends favorite books -- and I see why. I was entranced, one edge, and entertained. King continues to prove he is one of the best.

This has been a King book that I have wanted to read ever since I saw the Stanley Kubrick film adaptation. It is an acknowledged fact that both are great and both are their own stories (even though Kubrick's is based on King's). There are parts that I appreciate from the book, amazing character insight, beautiful descriptions of the hotel, the battle with vices. With all that being said, I will say something controversial but yet brave, I wish the labyrinth was in the book. The labyrinth was beautiful in the film and I wish it was in the novel, but the topiary animals were pretty great too.

This was by no means my favorite King novel, 'Salems' Lot has that position, but it was not the worst. Through my readings of King I have found that I lean more to his older works than his more modern; I find the storylines of his earlier works to be more creative and have an all together more interesting narrative. Again, controversial yet brave.

Another King's genius, captivating story. An evil entity that is present in every moment and in every decision of the protagonists, where you gradually discover all the horrors that occurred in the Overlook Hotel and how it influences Jack and those around him. The vitality of the Hotel is felt and is not only seen as something that drives Jack crazy, but as another character in the novel, unlike the movie.
