This book has so much territory to cover, from the fall of Rome to the Reformation, that it’s just hard for it to flow well. It’s a very broad overview, and it doesn’t claim to be otherwise, but I prefer the Dan Jones books that are a little bit more focused, like The Plantagenets. This book basically just made me want to look for other books that flesh out some of these historical events more.

This was good an overarching history of the middle ages. It traces the history of europe, the middle east and other countries from the end of the roman empire to the sack of rome in the 1520s by highlighting certain elements of medieval history such as that of the crusaders, reformers and knights. This was quite long but actually needed to be this length to get an in depth history of this world shaping time.
