Would have given this book 5 stars, but the epilogue just ruined it. I read this book in less than 24 hours, it was that good. But that epilogue. I won't spoil it, but it's a terrible cop-out ending that makes the story unbelievable, even though it's supposed to be true. You want to root for the diary's author so bad, want her to turn her life around, get better, go on and do what she says she's going to do. It could have been a great story of redemption, but the epilogue. Oh, the epilogue. I'm disappointed.

I HATED THE ENDING SO MUCH MORE THAN THE WRITING. THO I DUNNO I STILL LIKE THE WRITING STYLE CAUSE IT PORTRAYS TRUTHFULNESS AND IMPULSIVENESS. GAH MIXED FEELINGS ABOUT THIS BOOK.

The book starts of very interestingly. At first the events seem realistic and the claim that the book is based on a real diary is credible. But when the protagonist gets involved heavily with drugs the descriptions become less credible. No young girl would write this way about the events. Especially the final parts of the book feel extremely cautionary. Therefore, it was small wonder to find out the book was indeed a fake. The writing style in general feels rather forced and artificial. As interestingly as the book starts of it gets really flat and educational which makes you feel betrayed by the claim of veracity.

This novel tore my heart - both as a result of the writing and the subject matter. The "authenticity" of the authorship definitely adds or takes away from the novel, depending on what you believe. Regardless, there is no denying the effect this story and writing will have on the minds of young adults.
