i get the hype, i loved this. perfect blend of magic, fantasy, romance & tragedy.
i loved the influence from the hunger games and goblet of fire with the trials. the issues of classism and racism. the TENSION was tantalisingly amazing!! i CANNOT wait until july for the second book!!!!

the pacing was very slow and it seemed like not much was happening except at the very beginning and end, although it was an interesting premise, I somehow couldn't stop comparing it to other books with similar themes (hunger games, shatter me, etc.) and how it pales in comparison, a lot of the side characters are one dimensional with very set roles and surface level motivations so I was not invested in any of their stories
the book does not stand out for me and was very predictable

I really enjoyed this book, it was really entertaining and the tension between the characters was SO good. I really liked the character development and seeing the character grow. I kind of guessed the ending, and was dreading it the moment Pae knew that she had to do it. like I knew that when Pae was going to betray Kitt, he's definetly gonna want to kill her, especially when he learned that she was an Ordinary (actually don't know if he knew that), but I thought that Kai would not be as betrayed when he found out she was an Ordinary, but it seems like he was as betrayed. I would say that this book is very good for a debut although the start of the book was a bit abrupt because it just started with all the Elite powers but we didn't have any explanation about them and the world. I did have an enjoyable time with the characters and I think the setting is also really well done.

Wow. I really enjoyed this book. Sure, parts of it were very similar to other books/stories, but that didn’t make it bad or unlikeable.

Kai was one of my favorite book men, rivaling Rhysand and Jameson IYKYK, so the ending shook me, and now I don’t know what to do with myself.

I liked that there wasn’t spice, but it still had me giggling and kicking my feet! The banter and tension was excellent, and I know it’s going to be way more intense in the next book…which, by the way, I need, like…yesterday.

For ME, this book was the perfect balance of a lot of things. The romance and the plot were interconnected, and I didn’t feel like one overpowered the other. I’m a fantasy girlie who doesn’t enjoy reading about fighting or war for extended periods of time, and I liked how things were broken up in this book. It was enough to help the plot, but not too much to bore me.

Tw: Genocide, grief

The premise of the society built on survivors of a plague who developed magical abilities is pretty intriguing. It’s a very unique magic system set up… but there are so many different magic powers that it seems like there is no rhyme or reason to them. There is just a lot of them. Offensive, defensive. Put in whenever the plot needs something explained away, oh look, a new power we have never heard of.

The dialogue is VERY unrealistic and stilted. Because of the dual narration, the overlap caused so much repetition but from the opposite main character that if the author had cut it, the book would have been FAR shorter. Like half the size.

The MMC being a complicit in the genocide of people without powers is pretty icky. If he is the future enforcer, where is the current one?

This rare material that was invented “By means far too complicated for me to understand” that prevents people from using their powers… that felt a little like a cop out explanation.

basically just the hunger games but with magic. the love triangle didn’t make sense at first & seemed unnecessary but ties in nicely with the plot. very short chapters & duel POV.
