I'm not sure if I would have enjoyed this book more or less if I'd read the rest of the series, but this book was just ok for me. The mystery was cool, although the very undermentioned side plot about the cult was really interesting and I wish it had been explored more. The main plot was fine, although it felt repetitive at times. I didn't mind the characters, and some of my lack of connection is probably due to not having read other books in the series.

I'm definitely curious about Krueger's experience with Indigenous folks - the majority of the characters in the book are Indigenous, and aspects of Indigenous cultures play a big part in the book. I know Krueger himself is not Indigenous, but I'm curious as to how his research was done, if he met with people in the communities he's writing about, etc. It seems that he put a lot of effort in, I just don't know enough about American Indigenous groups to know how accurate he was.
