I could not figure out why my husband kept telling me I'd like this book about a boy who was a dragon slayer when I'm not really into fantasy OR male protagonists. Eventually I relented and I can already tell in January that this is going to be one of my favorite books of the year.

This alternate history of southern Canada mixes dragons with contemporary high school life. The main character is not Owen, but is instead a story narrated by his best friend/bard, a teenage girl named  Siobhan who is naturally gifted at strategy and everything music.
Siobhan and Owen DO NOT have any kind of romance.
The secondary characters are mostly female and well-rounded, and I'm obsessed with Owen's aunt Hannah the blacksmith.

I love the way the dragons are folded into real history, and it feels contemporarily right as well. RIP Michigan.
