Disliked the writing style (too much tell, not enought show for me) and found the child sexual descriptions & abuse too disturbing. Im unsure if the plot would have developed, but these first 46 pages (i.e. where I DNFed) felt as if purely for shock value. I went into this book expecting it to be weird, but was disappointed with being served disgusting scene after disgusting scene without any plot or satisfactory characterisations.

Narrow and meandering. Jumps from one character to another randomly from paragraph to paragraph. Characters know things they should not with no explanation. Heavily relies on shocking or disgusting the reader without providing any real narrative beyond people and the world being terrible, which maybe is the only point of this book.

This book was a lot but ultimately I did like the book. Moshfegh's prose is intoxicating and I am looking forward to reading more of her works. Only 4 stars for me because there was an element of religiosity that just didn't resonate with me, having grown up without religion.

This book was gross. Not even in a good way. Clearly this author is talented, but the story was so perverse that it seemed they were just going for shock value. I only finished it because I invested too much time into it already, and was hopeful that it would at least end in a meaningful way. It didn't.
