I really enjoyed this book. I think giving wade an asshole phase once he got rich always made sense. It’s only realistic, bezos and musk style. But the challenges and experiences help him learn that his love for his friends and partner is far more important than his addiction to the internet and the oasis. The theme of mystery video game is carried over from the first book and I enjoyed the darker view we get into a disturbed Halliday’s mind. It is a good lesson for wade not to repeat the same mistakes that Halliday did. The plot twist of Anorack gaining AI consciousness was exciting and I loved the suspense of trying to defeat him! I hope they don’t butcher the movie like they did with RP1 but my hopes are low.

Using disabled people as "guinea pigs" for experiments, having them go under possibly fatal surgery to get equipment and implants in their brains, and then shutting down the program once noninvasive equipment is completely finished is reprehensible.  Like its giving the ok to experiment on disabled people because its free and its for the betterment of (ablebodied) humankind. How many ablebodied people voluntered for the experimental tech surgery and implants? Zero, in the book only disabled people qualified.

Wow I did not like this. I feel like waaaay too much was stuffed into such a short books. This book had 7 quests, all of which were solved without a lot of actual puzzle solving as people just magically knew the answer. The characters didn't really grow either, and Aech and Shoto were didn't develop at all. My biggest problem with this one was just how much this book relied on nostalgia. I do not know much about 80s tv and video games, but I still really enjoyed the first book because the quests and characters were so interesting. This one spent a lot of time on the nostalgia factor and I was just bored and confused.
