An Indiana Jones flavored adventure in New England

Let me preface this by saying I enjoy books by Douglas Preston. Riptide is a fun summer read, that will leave you guessing as to what exactly is St. Michael's Sword. Slow at times, but still enjoyed the concept and read. Gave it 3 stars for the parts that I found slow.
Pirates. You know you wanna read it!
This is the tale of a dreadful, mean, sadistic pirate and his lost booty. In the modern world, normal people set out to uncover this hidden treasure, taking with them all the tools that science and a lot of money to yield. But it's still a challenge.
I think I might need another pirate book!

Pure brain candy that mixes a mysterious island, buried pirate treasure, and a deadly curse. Loads of action though not much character development. Listened to the audio read by Scott Brick.
A tale of lost pirate treasure in the vein of films such as Indiana Jones and National Treasure. While it started a bit slow, building the history of the water pit and the tragedy that struck all that tried to uncover its treasure, including Malin Hatch's family, it came to a rip-roaring crescendo -- action, adventure, romance, tempests, pirate treasure, double crosses -- it had it all. It also had a great line of dialogue in the closing chapter, which I am not spoiling anything by revealing without context: "head or tail."
Update: I am subtracting a star because author Douglas Preston seems to be a pretty big douchebag.

Excellent novel. One of my favorite Preston/Child novels. Fast-paced, adventurous, and totally unpredictable. A little bit of history, modern technology, science, religion, and structural engineering all woven together to make for quite a spectacular read. I would have given this a 5-star, but only books that make an everlasting impression on me are saved for that rating. Nevertheless, this is one of the best fictions I've ever read.
