I received a copy of Planet Hockey: First Star of the Game from Scholastic Canada in exchange for an honest review.
After an accident on the ice, Isaac has not been back to play ice hockey - unless you count the online hockey game in which he has now reached the top of its ranks. Through some alien mishaps, he gets recruited along with his amazing-hockey-player of a neighbour, Lily to help an intergalactic team play in their hockey games. Isaac is not quite ready to be back on the ice but he may not have a choice is the Pods are to have a chance against all the other teams.
Truth be told, I am not a hockey fan so I was pleasantly surprised when I actually enjoyed this graphic novel as much as I did. I really liked the cast of characters - especially the fun and trusting team of Pods. I thought that it was also a great story about Isaac and his fear of getting back on the ice. It sends a great message of facing one’s fears and also using your strengths to the best of your abilities no matter what challenges you may face.
