This is probably my favourite percy jackson book yet ! I loved all the new characters aswell as the last few chapters, they kept me on my toes and I was so absorbed into the novella.
My all time favorite book in the whole series
Let us find the dam snack bar," Zoe said. "We should eat while we can."
Grover cracked a smile. "The dam snack bar?"
Zoe blinked. "Yes. What is funny?"
"Nothing," Grover said, trying to keep a straight face. "I could use some dam french fries."
Even Thalia smiled at that. "And I need to use the dam restroom."
...
I started cracking up, and Thalia and Grover joined in, while Zoe just looked at me. "I do not understand."
"I want to use the dam water fountain," Grover said.
"And..." Thalia tried to catch her breath. "I want to buy a dam t-shirt.”
This made me roll on the floor
But it also contained emotional parts like Bianca and Zoe's death
And I just feel bad for Nico now

Compared to “The Lightning Thief” and “Sea of Monsters,” this book definitely feels more mature and dark. Even from the beginning, the pacing is still fast but we aren’t in our typical “Percy is attacked at school and needs saving” trope. The characters are more mature and start to face really devastating situations. You will laugh and you will cry 100%. Great transition for the middle of the series going into the really serious and darker latter half.
Things I loved:
- The characters - I know, shocker. But this book centers around characters we’ve never interacted with before and despite the short time we spend with them, you really feel for them especially when things go wrong. Even when I hated them for being jerks, I still cried at the end of the day.
- Shift to dark tones - obviously the PJO story has always been dark as a bunch of entities try to kill an adolescent boy, but this book is different. Percy is reintroduced as a mature individual as he is now the one doing the saving at the beginning. We witness the death of close allies, signifying how Percy can’t save everyone and opens our eyes to the reality of what’s to come
- Character development - even though the characters feel more mature from the beginning, you can see it continue to occur throughout the book. Even when apart for the whole book, we get great insights into Percy and Annabeth’s relationship and how much they’ve grown to care for each other over the years.
- the COMEDY - despite being the darkest and saddest book so far, I swear this one is the funniest. I wrote “Lmao” and “lol” way too many times.
Things I didn’t like:
- Meaningless side quests? - this is mainly about the beginning. After everyone minus Percy goes on the quest, I swear nothing happens, I don’t even remember. Percy does a bunch of random stuff that, yes ends up being important, but just feels so blah sometimes.
- lack of emphasis on Bianca’s death - when I say that I mean I wish they were more explicit about her dying i.e. finding her body. At first I was thinking that Rick didn’t want to describe a dead body in a kids book which is fine, but then he describes what Luke looked like after he literally fell off a cliff.
