I hadn't realised that it was 5 years since I read the second in the Ripley series and I have had this old copy ( the penguin edition features a filmed version starring Dennis Hopper going back to 1977 which haven't seen) picked up in a charity shop for a while.
It was fun returning to the world of the sociopathic hero created by Patricia Highsmith and this book starts with a classic piece of manipulation as Ripley is chatting to his dodgy art dealer friend Reeves who wants Tom to kill a troublesome mafia criminal. Tom refuses but recalling a local party where he feels he was snubbed by picture framer Jonathan Trevanny , a thoroughly decent Englishman living with lovely French wife Simone and son, and discovering a rumour that Jonathan has a serious illness, manipulates Reeves into trying to get Jonathan to kill for a monetary reward, Tom at his scheming worst.
The first half of the book then sees Ripley taking a backseat but in part two he re-emerges to wreak havoc in the surroundings of the quiet French village where he lives.
Ripley is a great creation and you feel the joy Patricia Highsmith must have felt as she wrote each line and crafted a plot that sees him reach new dastardly heights.
Definitely a favourite character and I will try and find the 2 filmed versions and get to book 4 sooner rather than later.

Quite enjoyable, well written and a fun read. Who doesn't like to delve into foreign locales, schemes, murder and psychopathic tendencies once in a while. Très agréable!
fantastic, different pace from the first two books because of the dual narrative
