This book is soaked in grief.

We finally get to know the tragic tale of what happened to Harriet's mother. What could have possibly compelled a woman to leave not only a newborn but two other children behind? The answer is of course war and duty to her nation. Sadly, she never returned. Until now.

It was hard reading this book because, after six novels, a reader loves Flavia and her family enough to grieve with them. We watch them go through the motions and try to keep it together and wish them the best. I didn't keep it together, not even as I write this.

This book brings about a few other important revelations, not only about Harriet's mother but about Flavia and her family legacy. Why everyone indulges her and the fact that much is expected of her. Too much perhaps.

Oh my gosh! I don't know what to say about this latest in the adventures of Flavia de Luce. The idea that she wanted to bring her mother back into the family fold was just heartbreaking. And the way the book ended I hope Bradley writes more though I know the original book contract was for 6 books of which this was the 6th.

This one seemed short on true sleuthing, but big on understanding what might be in store for Flavia's future. Lots of history of the DeLuce family and some lovely moments between Flavia and the other characters. The audio narrator is fantastic, and I may consume all my future books via audio so that I can enjoy the characters that much more!

Best in the series so far. I enjoyed learning more of the back-story and history of the de Luce family.

Have we reached the end of Flavia already? I am happy to have many questions answered, but it's not enough!

I go rather hot and cold on this one. I didn't get very interested until a little more than half way through, and then I had to read to the end. I thought the mystery very disjointed. The focus is on a funeral - the preparations for it and the family's reactions. Don't want to say more for fear of spoilers for those who are just starting the series. The ending, however, provides an interest in what's going to happen next in Flavia's young life.

Another great installment! I have really enjoyed this series.

Ah Flavia! I've missed you!
Now more than ever I am so curious to find out what is next for Flavia. Another fantastic addition to the Flavia tales.

This is both my least favorite and most favorite in the series so far. My least favorite because it's terrifically heartbreaking (have tissues at the ready), but my most favorite because it's all about the family, and that's what AB does best. The mysteries/murders: a bit forced and out-there, but the family interaction: so pitch-perfect and absorbing. Our little Flavia is growing up so fast!
