2.5 stars really.
I came to this book thinking I would love it but I just found it sad. It’s about a 27 year old woman from a privileged background who gets fired from her job in an art gallery and spends her life in her New York apartment taking pills trying to sleep the time away.
While it is darkly funny and mocks the superficial art world it circles, drawing out all the politics and performance, exposing it as essentially a popularity contest, there’s only so much of that kind of thing I can take. It did have its deeper moments (both the narrator’s parents are dead and it touches on her relationship with them) but it never gets past being one big joke which I just didn’t find that amusing.
I think the ending does redeem the book slightly as the narrator comes out of her hibernation, but for me this was just too depressing to really enjoy.

YES ugh. this book is a new favourite. I at first wondered if I was supposed to pity the main character as the reader…. but by the end I aspired to be this woman. She did what she wanted to and did it without shame despite what’s socially acceptable. And the last line of the book? beautiful. loved it so much
