This is my first Colleen Hoover and will probably me my last. I've read a lot of dark books but this one was graphic in a way I did not expect. I highly recommend people check the trigger warnings before reading. Spoilers below:

The child abuse is graphic and directed at an actual infant in one situation. I don't even have kids and that was hard for me to get through.

The twist at the end partially redeems this book, but it was really hard to get through the dark narration and the shocking events.

The level of chaotic freedom a writer must possess to create this book is nothing short of WILD!

I can’t say I hated it, how could I? The writing was sharp, the plot gripping from the very first page. But what rattled me most was just how disturbingly twisted this story was. Then again, who are we kidding? The world we live in isn’t exactly a picture of innocence.

The special edition’s epilogue was a revelation, flipping the script on who the real psycho in this tale was. To be clear, without that final section, I think I’d still be grappling with an unsettling sense of incompleteness.

This book leaves the ending deliberately open to interpretation, and yet I can’t help but wonder: Colleen, how did you manage to create a world so steeped in darkness? I’m still slightly disturbed!

The author masterfully pulled me into a love-hate dance with the characters—one moment I was empathizing with them, the next I wanted to scream at their choices. Several waves of suspicion crashed over me from start to finish, keeping me on pins and needles until the very last word.

And so, here I sit, unsure of how to process this dark and twisted thriller. But one thing I do know is this: I felt something, deeply - at times triggered. And for that alone, this book stands apart from most thrillers I’ve read.
