This book had a good mix of mystery and psychological tension, with some surprising twists that kept me hooked. But the ending, especially the letter twist, felt a bit forced, and the romance didn’t leave much of an impression. It’s a fast paced and entertaining read, but not something that will stick with me for long.

  • the writing is unbelievably uncreative and boring. i don't think figurative language was ever used, save for a simile here and there. she never describes what anything looks like. i can think of only two times when she maybe mentioned a color. it was like reading the stage directions of a script because she only wanted to describe in excruciating detail the characters' actions.
    • my hot take is that my seventeen year old self could've written this book. my author friends' writing skills already surpassed this book in like 2018.
  • it was mysterious and suspenseful so that was fun
  • ambiguous ending which i can enjoy
  • it may have been a fun thriller but this is definitely not a romance 😭 the romantic leads are so incredibly flat and they have no chemistry at all. no one has any redeeming traits. the only character with a personality at all is girlboss verity
  • there is way too much smut in this book and i eventually skipped those parts because i was bored. also why is verity describing every single time she had intercourse in her autobiography
  • we need to decenter men in 2025. every sentence is just about jeremy, the most boring man on the planet. even though the protagonist and eponymous character are both women. this book does not pass the bechdel test. i strongly believe that all women authors' books should pass the bechdel test
  • also why does it feel like everyone's deduction skills are very poor. like aren't you guys mystery writers
  • i'm being unnecessarily nitpicky but there's some random manipulation power dynamic going on with how jeremy already knew who she was and specifically chose her to hire blahblahblah. it's annoying and kind of strange
  • it was like she tried to write a gone girl but wanted to make nick dunne triumphant at the end. unfortunately, just like gone girl, i was always rooting for amy dunne/verity

A very intriguing and quick story! It caught my interest from the beginning and I was interested to keep reading. I do feel like the build up to the turning point took a while and more action could have happened in the middle. I do also wish that some of the book series that Verity wrote was included to get a sense of how her stories were written to see if her true self was written in her books.
I did have a feeling that Jeremy was involved in Verity’s accident, and I believe the truth is a mix of the manuscript and the letter.

Verity offered a great suspenseful story that left you wondering till the very end. I don't know that we got a final "truth", so to speak, but it was enjoyable. Some themes pertaining to the loss of children and/or parents may be a trigger for some. So be mindful, but the story was great and the final moments were satisfying for what this story was. There were a few things missing from this book for me, perhaps is the resolve at the end where I couldn't find myself giving this a full 5 stars.

This book is fucked up.
Yes the ending was one hell of a plot twist but I don't know what I think of it.

At least this book made me understand trigger warnings..
