This was so much better than I was expecting. I don't typically enjoy the Special Pet genre of nonfiction, as it can be overly sentimental or too sad to handle. But here, Cooper has written an uplifting yet down-to-earth memoir about adopting and learning from her blind cat, Homer. I particularly enjoyed the focus not only on the cat, but on how her experiences with Homer shaped the rest of her life -- her job, relationships, sense of adventure, and so on. There's also a couple of truly riveting chapters about 9/11 that are not to be missed.
As a cat lover, there was a good chance that I was going to love this story and I was certainly not disappointed. Cooper's writing shows that our connections with our pets are an emotional, life-long connection, and how our animals are all exceptional in some way. Homer certainly teaches us all a lesson in exceeding expectations, defying the odds, and seeing beyond the surface, which makes this a truly heart-warming read.
Truly one of the best non-fictions I've ever read, and a permanent fixture in my bookcase. Sweet and hilarious, I highly recommend to anyone looking for a little bit of joy.
I just loved this book. I am partial to black cats to begin with, and Homer has the sweetest personality ever! I find myself telling people about him all the time. It makes me want to go get all the kitties that no one wants at our shelter.
Inspiring and touching, this book is definitely worth your time and investment.
Homer is a unique cat, and touched many lives. Despite being blind, he affects those around him in a way that you'd never think possible.

Actually, I picked this up by accident. I was browsing through cat books at the library (hey, I love felines!) when I chanced upon this book. The cover and blurb were enough to convince me that it was a book worth reading, so...read it, yeah? :)
Trust me, you won't regret picking this book up!

A heartwarming story of a blind cat. An easy read that had me laughing out loud. Not for dog lovers! Cat people will totally get it.
Homer's Odyssey by Gwen Cooper is a heart-breaking and hilarious look at the life of an eyeless cat. Cooper undertook the care of wee Homer when he was just a few weeks old and a life-threatening infection had already taken his eyes from him. But rather than become a fearful, cringing scaredy cat, Homer embraced every single moment of life as the blessing it is, teaching both Cooper and her friends important lessons. Cooper has a unique talent for capturing feline behavior with such perfection, every scene comes to life. This is one of those rare books that had me telling everyone around me about, and even reading scenes out loud that were absolutely too good not to share. Homer teaches Cooper to look at the people around her differently, and he changes her as well. I dare you to try and not fall in love with this bundle of energetic love. And God bless Cooper for not ending the book on the bittersweet note that so many of these pet memoirs do! It was a joy to read from the first to last page!
I was a little disappointed in this book. There was not enough about Homer and too much about Sept 11th and meeting her husband. The best part of the audiobook was a question and answer with the author and her husband after the book ended.
