I'm giving this book a bump in stars, despite the weakish ending and ultimately disappointing main character, because it made me laugh-out-loud more than a couple times. Also, because Bagieu's artwork just so very charming.
Will write more closer to publication date.

The art is stunning, one twist I saw coming, the other was a surprise and an interesting one. It was a page turner.

Oh snap, didn't see that coming!
The only reason this gets two stars instead of one is because I rather liked the art.
The story itself...that, I have some issues with. I won't go into all of them, but the biggest one is...the fact that we're apparently supposed to be pleased that Zoe and Agathe 'pull one over' on Rocher by stealing his book and taking all the credit for it. Agathe, I could root for, because she did a lot of hard work and had basically found her passion, something she excelled at, and I could also understand her being hurt that her love and attention weren't enough for Rocher any more. Zoe, though...she didn't do anything, or find anything worth working towards. She might have started to find a interest in books? Maybe? But she still didn't seem interested in actually writing them, or really doing anything with her life. She just slept with a guy and then stole his book. Granted, the guy was something of a self-centered jerk, but...I think a lot of us would behave the same way, were we in his position. Don't we all want praise and recognition for the work we do? If you pour your time and heart and very life into writing something, it's understandably hard to deal with it when people scorn or look down on that something. And as for how he was 'ignoring' Zoe in favour of writing...that's called motivation. Having it is why some people actually manage to FINISH the things they start to write, while the rest of us are stuck with bits and pieces of incomplete stories.
TL;DR, I wasn't sure what I was supposed to take away from this. "It's okay to plagiarize/steal someone else's stuff if they're a jerk"? But doesn't doing that make YOU an even BIGGER jerk, especially if you're really just doing it for the money and fame?
I love clever characters--tricksters are "my jam", as they say. I enjoy sly plotting and subterfuge and slowly uncovering wheels within wheels, and I absolutely glory in a well-executed double-cross, but this book gives us none of those things. Instead we're given a childish, unlikable, directionless main character who wants something 'better' or more out of life, but isn't willing to actually put in the time or effort to get them for herself...which would be fine if she changed or grew at all over the course of the story. Unfortunately, this isn't the case, which left me feeling honestly pretty annoyed, and basically like I'd wasted my time reading the thing.
Bekah rating: 1 star (for the story), 3 stars (for the art); 2 stars, total.
