The Fault In Our Stars is a well written, beautiful novel that tells the story of a girl named Hazel Grace Lancaster who while battling her terminal illness meets Augustus Waters and the two embark on a journey of universal discovery and love.
The story is something truly special. Like the book itself says this is not a cancer book. It's takes a long hard look at the lives of young people battling cancer. It certainly doesn’t sugar coat things that happen to them or makes them have wisdom beyond their years like other books before this. It makes them and their battles real and raw. John Green has put a lot of care and love in not only telling a good story but respecting the kids and their families who go through these struggles every single day. It combines a touching love story with a thought provoking look at life and what happens to us after.
Hazel is a breath of fresh air as a main character. She is funny, strong, brave, and independent. She also is a bit of a introvert who doesn’t like to spend time with a lot of people outside of her home. Her reason for this is she doesn’t want to leave a positive mark on people’s lives so they don’t have to suffer lose when she dies. She is also aware of her illness and her mortality, she knows she has limited time left and she wants to use her time her way. I love her no nonsense attitude and her sharp sense of humor, she doesn’t show her soft side too often but when she does it is truly spectacular.
Augustus is the complete opposite of Hazel, he is optimistic, funny, smart, and romantic. With a wisdom beyond his years, he lives life to the fullest and tries to make the most of his time left. He is also a very good friend to Isaac, a fellow cancer survivor, trying to make people smile when they are at the lowest point. Despite all this he is not ignorant to his disease but instead of thinking about it all the time, he doesn’t let it define him as a person.
The writing was very well put together and flowed nicely from page to page. The romance between Hazel and Augustus was sweet, adorable, and very heart warming. It was very real and powerful and you could feel the attraction and genuine love these two had for one another. They also had a deep respect for each other and the others boundaries.
While this story might be short, it is in no way less powerful or emotional. It is a story of life, death, and all that comes after.
