Quite a great book right until that unnecessary ending.

I’m certainly not the first to say it, but what a terrible ending!
I somehow managed not to realise the significance of the article until very near the end. Both article and ending feel incongruous and add nothing to the rest of the plot.

Otherwise the book is very well written. The subtleties make it an enjoyable read and the ‘solution’ to the virgin birth mystery is interesting and unexpected. The second big shock wasn’t necessary at all!

this book was lovely while it lasted. not sure it will be a classic for me or reread - but was interesting and captivating in the moment. i liked how the language described more 'monotonous' tasks, as well as showing how love can cloud the mind and change perspectives on everything you do. also loved the emphasis on the human importance to connected to others. i did wish jean would give a proper scolding to her mum and have a "i am so sick of you" moment. so much negativity!

In the beginning it really drags you in and you quit quickly get invested in the story and character but then by the end it starts to get desperate for a conclusion. It goes from this somewhat slow to medium pace but by the end you feel ruched. Personal I did enjoy the book and I think I’d recommend it since I did really adore it until about three quarters in but then it drastically changed after the somewhat “plot twist”. I think it’s like the the title says, it’s a smaller pleasure and I really don’t regret reading it but I also don’t think I will be re reading it for quite some time if ever.
