This was an excellently researched portrayal of the 1950s, ultimately creating a beautifully written historical fiction novel. It is rich with nostalgic charm and romantic anguish.

Chambers’ straightforward, yet effective narrative creates an accessible and relatable story. The pace was fairly steady with little room to be drawn astray.

The hamarita of this novel, however, is the underlying villainisation of queer people - I think. The relationship between Gretchen and Martha felt rush, and as though an afterthought form Chambers, most likely to serve as a justification for the straight romance. Granted, it’s quite possible I had just anticipated a more pleasurable LGBTQIA+ relationship and read too far into something that wasn’t there to begin with.
