I was absolutely inspired by this book. It's the American dream on such a personal level. Just incredible.
read it with my english teacher, it was great
This is the first memoir I’ve picked up in a while, and it’s not the typical memoir I read. While I found the trajectory of the story to be predictable, I found the message inside to be incredibly moving nonetheless.
The Pursuit of Happyness is a story of hope and trauma. Gardner takes into account all of his successes and pitfalls in his past, and bundles them together to produce a memoir that I believe exists to inspire hope in those who have little. He continues to repeat his message of try hard, shoot for the stars, if you fail take a break and go right back at it. He always believed in himself, and his confidence never allowed him to give up entirely, because of which he ended up succeeding.
Now, this book is not going to be the message everyone needs. He encourages everyone to keep hustling and let some things slide in the short term in order to impact the greater good. That kind of message is incredibly hard to follow, and not always the best course of action. However, his message is that it worked for him and he wants to be that person on the other side offering hope and support when there is none. He has such a big heart, and his story was beautiful to hear.

Well written memoir- was a little “front heavy”
one of the books I will remember till my last
a must for a wanderer, who is cloudy on his/her future, can gain his/her confidence by giving this book a read
I ,amongst them, see a very dim light,a minute one , on what path I should take to become the light house that gardener became

This book ran hot and cold for me. At times I was thoroughly into the book, looking into a life very different from mine and thinking "Wow - he triumphed against amazing adversity." At other times I was rolling my eyes wondering how much longer I would have to endure the chapter and thinking that some of his sexual exploits added nothing to the book, but cheapened it a bit. I did appreciate his honesty in telling the good, the bad and the ugly of his life -- but felt that huge chunks were also left out. So, all in all, a mixed bag.
I read this book for my novels class. While I did enjoy it, it was a big differences from something I would usually read. His story is very interesting and very inspiring, but it just wasn't my cup of tea.
Decent book. Not much in common with the movie, however.
NOT what I was expecting. This memoir went back into his childhood and brought it up to almost-present day, which would have been great except for all the sex, abuse, and f-bombs crowding in the pages.
Cannot recommend it at all.
