i have to say this was kind of clunky and became difficult to really stay invested in by the end. i think it could have used more edits or something, also a lot of typos in the edition i read. sucked me in from the beginning though, just wish the execution was a little stronger

This book had a lot of characters which can be difficult for me sometimes. I struggled to keep track of some of them. It was a bit slow in the beginning but in the middle it really picked up and the end kept me up too late at night because I wanted to finish. Overall I really enjoyed this book.

Enjoyed this book although I had guessed the whole premise of the island and its people quite early on. Turton always tells a very captivating story regardless of what he’s writing about.

Not at all what I thought it would be but in the best way. Rarely can I not see where a story is going and this one had me guessing the entire time. A fantastic plot with relatable character struggles.

The premise and set-up seems like it could be good, but my confusion with what it’s going on just isn’t getting better. The chapters aren’t labeled so you have to figure out whose POV we are reading from, but also why are we using 1st and 3rd person in the same chapter for the same character? I don’t have the patience for this.

The world ended, but there's one island that has kept back the fog. A group of people led by a few scientists have lived peacefully on the island for 90 years. But, when a murder occurs, the fog starts rolling in, and the only way to stop it is by solving the murder. Except... everyone's memory was wiped of the night of the murder, so not even the murderer knows whodunnit.

I quite enjoyed The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcaste, so I was excited to get another murder-mystery-with-a-speculative-twist book from Turton. Going in, I was expecting to be into the mystery and be okay with the scifi element. But to my surprise, I ended up ONLY caring about the scifi aspects of this book. The way that the scifi/dystopian world is introduced to the reader is done so well. There's a lot the characters know that the reader needs to get caught up on, and the slow way that was disseminated instead of info-dumping was great. The scifi reveals that the characters didn't know, I was so surprised by. I really liked how we floated between the characters and Abi to put those things together. The concepts that are strung together to create this point in this dystopian world are great However, the murder mystery itself? The thing the book is named after? I felt underwhelmed by it. It felt like there were very few possibilities and the investigation didn't matter much. That made mystery-related reveals towards the end feel unsurprising and not necessarily satisfying. In my opinion, the advertising for this book went a little bit too hard into the mystery side rather than the scifi side I think the book actually favors.

Overall, I got a good amount out of the dystopian society the author set up, but I didn't care about the mystery that the actual plot hinges around.
