It's crazy to think that when I read the first book in this series I was a teenager barely out of high school and now I somehow am an adult lawyer with responsibilities. Whoever thought that would be a good idea?

All jokes aside, going into this book I really tried to keep myself from holding onto the nostalgia so that it wouldn't cloud my judgment for the story as a whole. I am happy to say that nostalgia played an almost invisible role in the fact that I thoroughly enjoyed this story.

I'd forgotten what a great world crafter Chima was and I am so glad to return to her writing after so long.

This story still holds its place as very unique despite the many fantasy novels I have read in the last eleven years. Though the characters themselves are young, making this a coming-of-age tale of sorts, there was no moment in this book that had me irritated with them for typical "teenage" behaviors.

This book ended on a major cliffhanger and I will certainly not wait another eleven years to finish this series.

This was even better than the first book and still just as rich in world building. Raisa is now hidden away at a military school learning skills that will hopefully help her if war breaks out into her country while also trying to stay hidden from the wizards who want to bend her to their will. Han also happens to be at the same campus only he is in the wizard school, training to one day help the clans and the princess take her thrown from the conniving wizards.

I loved Hans POV in this book. All of his chapters made me want to read more. Also, his friendship with Dancer is everything. I greatly appreciate that they aren't hiding everything from each other.

4.5 stars. I thought The Exiled Queen was even better than The Demon King. In this book Raisa is running from an arranged marriage and Han is starting his schooling at the magic school in Oden's Ford. Of course that's precisely where Raisa decides to run to and hide.

I grew to like Raisa more and really enjoyed reading about her time spent as the magic school with both Han and her friend Amon who is destined to become her personal guard. There is a little bit of a love triangle here, but I didn't find it annoying. I'm pretty sure it's obvious who Raisa will eventually end up with, but I have to say that I love the other guy too.
Spoiler Amos is a great character and I want him to end up happy!

I'm looking forward to more of this series!
